The National Public Health Organisation (NPHO) announced on Friday that Greece has recorded its first case of West Nile virus infection for 2024.

The patient, who is believed to have contracted the virus in the Larisa regional unit, exhibited symptoms of mild encephalitis in the last 10 days of June and has since been discharged from the hospital.

West Nile virus infections have become a common occurrence in Greece during the summer months since 2010. The NPHO attributes the early appearance of the disease in 2024 to the milder winter temperatures experienced this year.
