Athens, Greece – A significant blow has been dealt to migrant smuggling operations in Greece with the dismantling of a major network trafficking people from Turkey to the island of Rhodes. In a joint operation, the National Intelligence Service (EYP) and the Coast Guard apprehended the ringleader, a Syrian known as “Abu Hamza,” along with ten other members of the criminal organization.
Authorities believe the network was responsible for smuggling approximately 60% of migrants arriving in Rhodes and the Dodecanese islands over the past two years. Operating out of luxurious villas rented through online platforms, the group provided migrants with forged documents to facilitate their onward journey to mainland Greece.
The arrest of “Abu Hamza” marks a crucial victory in the ongoing battle against human trafficking in the region.
