Clint Russel, the host of the Liberty Lockdown podcast, expressed his outrage on X, stating, “This is outrageous. Kicking off your event by replacing Jesus and the disciples with men in drag is unacceptable.” He further emphasized, “With 2.4 billion Christians across the globe, the Olympics has sent a clear message that they are unwelcome."
The striking routine featured 18 performers posing behind a long table with the scenic Seine River and the Eiffel Tower in view. Central to the performance was a performer adorned in an elaborate outfit with a silver headdress reminiscent of a halo from traditional religious artwork. As she smiled and formed a heart shape with her hands, her fellow performers danced and engaged with the audience through the camera.
Critics on social media accused the drag queens of mocking Christianity by reinterpreting the iconic scene. Marion Maréchal, a practicing Catholic, voiced her disapproval on X, stating, “To all the Christians watching the #Paris2024 ceremony who felt insulted by this drag queen parody, remember that this does not represent France but rather a left-wing minority willing to provoke.”
Conversely, many social media users celebrated the performance as a momentous occasion, especially following the historic participation of three drag queens carrying Olympic torches earlier in May. Artists Minima Gesté, Miss Martini, and Nicky Doll conveyed that their involvement symbolized unity and peace.
Nicky Doll, the host of Drag Race France, along with two other queens, also participated in a fashion and runway segment during the opening ceremony.
