Australia intends to impose fines on social media platforms amounting to up to 5% of their global revenue if they fail to control misinformation.
The proposed legislation addresses misleading content that threatens election integrity, public health, and safety, but exempts professional news and artistic expressions.
Communications Minister Rowland stated:
“Doing nothing and allowing this problem to fester is not an option.”
