JUST IN - Netherlands to declare state of emergency amid illegal migrant crisis and will ask for opt-out from EU migration policy

In response to concerns about immigration, the Dutch government announced measures aimed at discouraging asylum seekers. Among these measures are the end of open-ended asylum permits and stricter limits on family reunification for granted asylum. Additionally, plans are underway for a state of emergency law that may freeze new asylum applications for up to two years and reduce services for asylum seekers. Despite the EU's likely resistance to such measures, the Dutch government is seeking an exemption from EU asylum rules, reflecting a broader strategy to navigate existing migration agreements.

Dutch govt to declare 'asylum crisis' to curb migration.
The Dutch government says it aims to implement a raft of measures to limit migration in the coming months, including a moratorium on all new applications, days after Germany announced new border controls to keep out unwanted migrants.

In a statement on Friday, Faber announced that efforts are being made to deter asylum seekers from choosing the Netherlands.

The government reiterated its intention to seek an exemption from European Union asylum regulations, despite anticipated resistance from the EU, as member states have already agreed to a migration pact, and opt-outs are generally negotiated earlier in the process.

"Once legislation is adopted in the EU, opting out is not customary," EU spokesman Eric Mamer remarked to reporters, addressing the potential Dutch opt-out.

As part of its initial actions, the government plans to discontinue open-ended asylum permits and significantly restrict family reunification options for those granted asylum. Additionally, they will begin crafting an emergency law that could pause all new asylum applications for up to two years, while also reducing services available to asylum seekers.
