The Greek government faces potential losses in tourism revenue as a controversial new fee threatens to push cruise tourists towards destinations like Spain and Italy. The German Travel Association (DRV) has raised concerns that many German travellers may choose other holiday spots due to these new measures to reduce tourism congestion.
The Athens government plans to implement a €20 charge (£17) for cruise ship passengers disembarking in popular destinations such as Mykonos and Santorini. The DRV urges Greece to delay this policy until 2025 for those who have already booked their holiday packages.
According to the association, German tourists are particularly sensitive to price competitiveness, which could drive them to seek alternatives in the Western Mediterranean if Greece’s fees deter them from visiting.
