He also called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza, highlighting the escalating humanitarian crisis in the region.
He expressed his pleasure at the King of Jordan's participation in the summit, noting that Jordan plays a vital role as a stabilizing force in the broader Middle East region.
Mitsotakis highlighted that the crisis in the Middle East is, unfortunately, escalating and affecting the people of Lebanon. “I want to add my voice to the call for an immediate ceasefire in both Lebanon and Gaza, where the humanitarian disaster has reached nightmarish proportions. Greece was among the first to condemn Iran's attacks on Israel, as they contribute to the dangerous escalation of tensions and increase the risks to regional stability,” Mitsotakis said.
He noted that the summit included detailed discussions on European competitiveness and migration. “We also recognized that all Mediterranean countries are unfortunately on the front lines of the climate crisis, making our coordination in addressing these challenges even more imperative,” Mitsotakis stated.
He also underlined that regional developments were thoroughly reviewed during the meeting. He welcomed the informal trilateral meeting under the United Nations Secretary-General on the Cyprus issue. He hoped it would lead to the resumption of negotiations aimed at a solution based on Security Council resolutions, international law, and the EU acquis.
Addressing the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, Mitsotakis stressed, “Greece will always be a supporter of your efforts, and finally, 50 years after the Turkish invasion, we hope to achieve this much-desired solution.”
