Rural Revival: A Greek Village Rebuilds Through Faith and Family

Nestled in the fir-covered mountains of central Greece, the village of Fourna, with its population of just 180, seemed on the brink of extinction.

However, an unusual alliance between a local schoolteacher and an Orthodox priest is breathing new life into this quiet community, reversing its trajectory toward demographic collapse.

Located a four-hour drive from Athens, Fourna is a place of serenity, punctuated only by the toll of church bells and the occasional bark of a dog. For years, the survival of the village was gauged by the number of children attending its primary school—just two last year.

This dire situation spurred Panagiota Diamanti, an elementary schoolteacher pursuing a Ph.D. in artificial intelligence, and Rev. Constantine Dousikos, a former lumber machine operator turned priest, to launch a campaign to draw families to the area. By offering financial incentives through donations and municipal programs, their "New Life in the Village" initiative has begun to bear fruit.

So far, two families have relocated to Fourna, with five more expected by 2025. The primary school now has eight students—a significant milestone for a village facing the same challenges as much of rural Greece, where low birth rates and aging populations are accelerating decline.

“I think we did the obvious thing: Help the people here keep our village alive,” Rev. Dousikos said from the Church of Transfiguration of Christ, a modest stone structure in the village square. “Village life is not for everyone. You need to be good at manual work.”

The campaign has caught the attention of other struggling communities, with several local authorities seeking Diamanti’s guidance to replicate the program. For Fourna’s eight schoolchildren, life in the village has its perks—birthday celebrations in the main square and dodgeball games in a schoolyard with panoramic mountain views.

Vassiliki Emmanouil, who moved to Fourna with her six children, has found the village welcoming and generous. “The local priest and his wife treat me as family,” she said, adding that residents have left food at her door and encouraged her to reopen a bakery.

The challenges facing Fourna are emblematic of broader trends in Greece, where deaths have outpaced births since 2010. In 2022, deaths nearly doubled births, spurring the conservative government to increase family benefits and create a ministry of family and social cohesion. The Orthodox Church has also taken action, urging clergy to promote family life and describing children as “gifts from God” in a 2022 circular.

For the villagers of Fourna, the resurgence of children playing in the streets and attending church is a poignant sign of hope. Local business owner Giorgos Vassilikoudis, who runs a restaurant and guesthouse, admitted he was initially skeptical of the campaign. “At the start, I never thought families would come to live here,” he said. “But to my surprise, they did—and they’re happy. It’s very good for the village and an example for others.”
