The Peloponnese Region has unveiled an ambitious plan to develop Greece’s largest certified hiking trail network, spanning 1,729 kilometres and positioning the region among Europe’s premier hiking destinations.
This transformative initiative, launched as part of the Environment Ministry’s “Creation of a National Network of Paths and Hiking Routes” project, includes trail mapping and modernisation across Greece. The project aligns with Greece’s broader strategy to promote sustainable tourism and preserve its natural and cultural heritage.
Governor Dimitris Ptochos formalised the initiative by signing an agreement with Marinis Beretsos, CEO of Development Organization Parnonas S.A. The project, supported by a €2.95 million budget from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), aims to upgrade and certify trails across all Peloponnese regional units.
Key improvements include trail cleaning, debris removal, installation of modern signage, digital infrastructure development, and promotional campaigns. Expected to be completed within a year, the project will establish the Peloponnese as a hub for cultural and nature-based tourism while boosting the local economy.
“We are creating safe and modern trails that showcase our natural beauty and cultural heritage, offering visitors unforgettable experiences,” Ptochos stated during the agreement signing.
Part of Greece’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan under the “Green Transition” pillar, the project emphasizes sustainable development. It seeks to protect biodiversity, support local communities, and position the Peloponnese as a global hiking and ecotourism destination.
With its breathtaking landscapes and commitment to innovation, the Peloponnese is poised to become a beacon for hiking tourism in Greece and beyond.
