Djokovic declared that he would not participate in on-court interviews until he received an apology from the Nine Network. This stance is in response to comments made by reporter Tony Jones, which Djokovic perceived as mocking Serbian fans.
"I am protesting against the host broadcaster, Nine Network, after Tony Jones made a mockery of Serbian fans," Djokovic explained during his press conference.
The controversy stems from a live broadcast where Tony Jones criticized Djokovic, calling the 24-time Grand Slam champion a "has-been." "Welcome back to Melbourne Park, where you can see the Novak Djokovic fans, they're in full voice. The chants are quite extraordinary," Jones remarked before turning to the audience and singing, "Novak, he's overrated. Novak's a has-been. Novak, kick him out. Boy, I'm glad they can't hear me. Anyway, let's get onto the tennis."
These comments didn't sit well with Djokovic, who recently achieved significant success with a gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games. "He made a mockery of Serbian fans," Djokovic stated during his press conference on Sunday night, clarifying that his frustration was directed at the network rather than the fans, despite receiving some boos during his match.
The incident has intensified discussions surrounding Djokovic’s interactions with the media and continues to be a focal point at this year’s Australian Open.
