Varoufakis back in the political spotlight with new party

Greece’s former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis is re-entering political life announcing on Thursday the founding of a new party which he will present on March 26, one day after the country’s National Day of Independence.

Varoufakis is best known for his tense negotiation and often repudiation of the Eurogroup during his term as Finance Minister and for urging a national referendum to decide Greece’s fate in the European Union.

The new party will be related to the movement DiEM25 (which he cofounded with Croatian philosopher Srecko Horvat), he said on a tweet.

"Three years ago today the Greeks decided to rage against the dying of the light. They were betrayed. But never defeated. In two months (26/3) a new DiEM25 affiliated Greek party will come into being. There is no such thing as a final defeat, just as there is no final victory!"

Varoufakis and Srecko Horvat launched DiEM25 (The Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 ) in 2016 in Berlin with the purpose to “re-politicise political decisions and to democratise the decision making process,” adding that his experience in Eurogroup meetings had left him with the conclusion that the EU was not democratic.

“What is going on in Greece is simply a reflection – an echo – of a far deeper crisis throughout the eurozone, which cannot be solved at any national or member-state level,” he said in an interview at the time.

“The obvious conclusion one must draw from this is that either you argue for a dissolution of the monetary union,  and then you can talk about national politics again quite sensibly. Or you should be talking about a pan-European movement for change throughout the eurozone.”
