PAOK finally ended their 34-year wait for a league title on Sunday as a 5-0 rout of relegated Levadiakos saw the Thessaloniki club win the Super League with one match to spare amid frenzied celebrations at the Toumba stadium.
Yevgeny Shakhov, Diego Biseswar, Fernando Varela and Karol Swiderski scored the goals that gave Razvan Lucescu’s team the points which made it mathematically impossible for second-placed Olympiacos to catch them, as a glorious season ended with the best possible outcome.
It’s the club’s first title win since 1985, and only the third since the club was established in 1926.
In Thessaloniki, PAOK is throwing a pyrotechnic-filled party to remember, as the Dikefalos tou Vorra celebrate their maiden Greek title in 34 years.
Last week, inspirational captain Vieirinha received the dreaded ACL injury against AEL, but he was included in the squad for this match by head coach Razvan Lucescu as a mark of respect and was among those to lead the celebrations with the Super League trophy.
The Toumba Stadium witnessed a stunning show of pyrotechnics which will be difficult for anyone to match!
Dimitris Pelkas, on the books of PAOK since a young teenager, struggled to hold back the tears of joy when the final whistle blew.
PAOK’s players and management hopped aboard the Champions Bus and headed towards the White Tower of Thessaloniki, where the joyous celebrations will continue long into the night!
