An elderly British tourist tragically passed away while hiking with his wife through the famous Samaria Gorge in Western Crete.

The man died in front of his wife, who desperately tried to save him.

According to reports from neakriti.gr, the Mayor of Sfakia Yannis Zervos said emergency crews immediately attended to the man, however they could not save him.

"The body of the British tourist was transferred to Agia Roumeli and from there by ferry to the port of Sfakia. The British Embassy has been informed," Mr. Zervos told Neakriti.

According to initial reports, the man probably died of a heart attack, however, this has not been confirmed as an autopsy is being performed. This is the second tragic incident reported of a tourist dying while crossing the gorge during the day.

The Samaria Gorge hike starts at the Xyloskalo trailhead at an altitude of 1,250 meters in the midst of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori). The hike itself is 16km and the first part is very steep, with tourists urged to take care.
