Greece through to quarterfinals of European Water Polo Championship

Despite trailing at halftime, Greece came from behind to defeat Romania 14-7 at the Men’s European Water Polo Championship to advance to the quarterfinals.

After the conclusion of the first period of play, the Romanians were surprisingly in front 3-1. They later led 4-1 in the second period, though Greece fought back, thus reducing Romania’s lead to 5-4 going into halftime.

With Greece needing to win this game in order to keep their Olympic qualification hopes alive, a strong second half was absolutely necessary. The Greeks did not disappoint in the third period, scoring six goals and conceding zero, taking a 10-5 lead. In the fourth period, Greece closed things out, winning 14-7 to reach the quarterfinals.

Konstantinos Genidounias had a tremendous game, scoring six goals. Alexandros Gounas, Marios Kapotsis, and Alexandros Papanastasiou each scored two goals as well.

Greece will now take on Croatia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
