By 4 years ago

Greece’s Maria Sakkari played her absolute best in the fourth round of the 2020 Australian Open, however that wasn't enough to secure her spot in the quarterfinals.

Sakkari was defeated by world number eight Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic.

The results from the match which lasted two hours and twelve minutes were 6-7 6-3 6-2.

Coming into the match, Sakkari led the head-to-head 2-1 over the Czech. Sakkari was looking to become the first Greek woman to ever reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam in singles. The Greek went up an early break in the first set, but wasted two opportunities to serve for the set (at 5-4 and 6-5).

The set was then decided by a tiebreaker, which Sakkari won 7-4 to take the first set.

However, Kvitova responded by winning the second set 6-3 to force a third set. The Czech was then able to carry this momentum into the third set, which she won 6-2 to book her spot in the quarterfinals.

Just remember Maria we are proud of you, and will continue to support you on your journey!
