Greece reopens access to Thessaloniki's Promenade

By 4 years ago

As of 10pm on Monday, April 27, Thessaloniki authorities reopened the city’s popular and stunning seaside promenade.

Since late March, the pedestrian road stretching from the White Tower to the Thessaloniki Concert Hall remained closed during most of the day and on weekends, as part of efforts to prevent overcrowding and contain the spread of the coronavirus.

“We don’t need to ban access to Thessaloniki’s – perhaps – most significant open space for longer, but general restrictions for unnecessary movements still apply,” Central Macedonia Governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas said.

Restrictions on movement will remain in place until May 4 when the first wave of eased restrictions is expected to come into effect.

“We can all enjoy the area without risking our health and the life of our fellow citizens,” he added.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Tuesday is expected to address the nation about the gradual lifting of coronavirus measures.
