Greece weighs further coronavirus curbs as outbreak grows

Greece's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to announce new covid-19 restrictions on Thursday.

Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias told ANT1 TV that health experts have recommended a one-month nationwide lockdown.

It is recalled last weekend, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced mandatory nationwide measures in order to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The new measures:

  • Use of a mask everywhere, indoors and outdoors
  • Daily curfews from midnight to 5:00 in the morning
  • Complete distance learning in universities
  • No gatherings

In Thessaloniki and Serres, there are specific lockdown restrictions:

  • Use of a mask everywhere, indoors and outdoors
  • Residents and visitors will need to send an SMS for movements outside the home
  • Daily curfews from 9pm-5am
  • 5:00 in the morning
  • All retail stores, bars, cafes, restaurants, gyms and churches will be closed
  • Schools will remain open
  • Complete distance learning in universities
  • All domestic/international flights and rail routes are suspended
Latest covid-19 numbers in Greece

Greece recorded 2,646 new cases of COVID-19 in the latest 24-hour reporting period.

This raises the total number of cases to 46,892.

4,271 are considered to be related to travel from abroad and 14,427 are related to an already known case.

One hundred and seventy-nine individuals are in ICU. Their median age is 67 years, and 42 of them are women. 88.8% have an underlying condition or are aged 70 years and above.

A total of 305 patients have been discharged from ICUs since the start of the pandemic in Greece.

The country’s pandemic death toll stands at 673. The median age of all was 79 years and 96.4% of the deceased had an underlying condition and/or age of 70 years or more.

Several regions reported between 30 and 50 new cases this day. The regions with over 50 confirmed cases are as follows:

  • 823 in Thessaloniki
  • 588 in Attica
  • 111 in Larissa
  • 85 in Drama
  • 83 in Rodopi
  • 78 under investigation
  • 72 in Serres
  • 61 in Evros
  • 57 in Kavala
  • 55 in Xanthi
  • 54 in Pella
  • 51 in Kilkis
