Deputy Consul General of the French Republic Damian Laban awarded Sperie Perakos the insignia of Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honor in a ceremony last month.
According to the Consulate General of France in New York, Sperie Perakos entered the US Army in February 1941. Originally from New Britain, CT, he was a Combat Intelligence Officer in the 448th Anti-aircraft artillery battalion and took part in the Normandy invasion, specifically at Utah Beach, which held the valuable port of Cherbourg.
Later, he flew in surveillance airplanes and helped provide vital intelligence information on areas throughout France where troops would be posted.
The Legion of Honour is the highest French order of merit for military and civil merits, established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte and retained by all later French governments and régimes.
