Legendary Greek baker Takis passes away aged 73

Takis Papadopoulos, the founder of the historic "Takis Bakery' in Koukaki, passed away on Monday after a long battle with cancer, at the age of 73.

He passed away on Kathara Deftera (Clean Monday), a day when people queued up from early morning to purchase their laganas.

Takis was born in 1948 in Thessaloniki, before moving to Athens where he founded 'Takis Bakery' in the late 60's.

Hidden in one of the most characteristic areas of Athens, 'Takis bakery' is a landmark in Koukaki.

Apart from the bread, the unique baguettes, cakes and sweets, make 'Takis bakery' one of the most famous in Athens.

Takis was loved by his neighbourhood and customers. He was a humble and hardworking man, with a sense of humour.

He is survived by his wife Anna, two children Artemis and Theodore and grandson Dimitrakis.
