Greece has just become a much more accessible holiday destination for Americans, thanks to new routes launched by United Airlines.

Earlier this week, the airline announced that it will be launching a trio of new nonstop routes: Newark Liberty International Airport to Dubrovnik, Croatia; Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Reykjavik, Iceland; and Washington Dulles International Airport to Athens, Greece.

“It’s been creating a pop in searches,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s vice president of international network and alliances.

All three seasonal routes are now available to book for travel starting in July:

  • U.S- Greece: daily departures from July 1 through Oct. 3.
  • U.S- Croatia: departing from Newark on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and from Dubrovnik on Tuesday, Fridays, and Sundays from July 8 through Oct. 3
  • U.S- Iceland: daily departures from July 1 through Oct. 3.

“As countries around the world begin the process of reopening, leisure travelers are eager to take a long-awaited getaway to new international destinations,” Quayle told Travel + Leisure.

“These three new routes unlock the natural beauty of the outdoors for our guests.”

Greece begins opening to more tourists

Despite the tourist season in Greece not fully opening until May 14, quarantine restrictions for visitors from the European Union, the Schengen area, the UK, the U.S., the United Arab Emirates, Serbia and Israel was lifted from April 19.

As long as tourists can provide a certificate confirming they have been vaccinated for COVID-19 or tested negative 72 hours before arriving, they will be permitted to enter, the Civil Aviation Authority (CA) said in a Notam.

For tourists wanting to enter Greece under the same conditions but are not from these aforementioned countries or blocs, they will be permitted to do so from May 14.
