At the 76th Session of the United Nations General Meeting in New York, Cyprus and South Sudan formally opened diplomatic relations.
Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodulides and South Sudanese Deputy Foreign Minister Deng Dau Deng signed the Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the two countries on Friday.
South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 after decades of war.
As of 2019, South Sudan ranks third-lowest in the latest UN World Happiness Report, third lowest on the Global Peace Index, and has the fourth-highest score on the American Fund for Peace's Fragile States Index.
