Efstratia Mavrapidou, one of the three yiayias (grandmothers) of Sykamnia that was nominated for the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize, died on Monday February 15 at the age of 96.
The three women from the iconic photograph continued to help refugees and migrants for a long time, offering what they could.
Of the three grandmothers, Maritsa Mavrapidou was the first to die.
She passed away in January 2019 at the age of 92.
Emilia Kamvisi is alive and 92 years old today.
All three women are children of Greek refugees from Asia Minor and they became a global symbol for the solidarity the people of Lesvos showed hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants hospitality.
The "yiayias of Lesvos" were visited and honoured in November 2015 by then President Prokopis Pavlopoulos.
They were visited by current Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the first female president of Greece, on August 15, 2020.
"Why do you say well done my child? What did I do?" they told AMNA when visited in Skala Sykamnia on the day their candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize, which was announced in January 2016.
When asked why they help the refugees and migrants, the yiayias replied: "They are good children. Sometimes tired from the trip, they help me carry the wood for my stove."
When Efstratia Mavrapidou visited her home in Skala Sykamnia on August 15, 2020, Sakellaropoulou, yiayia Efstratia and yiayia Emilia, surrounded by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, hosted refugees and migrants in their yard with baklava.
"Our traditional dessert from Asia Minor", said yiayia Efstratia.
The funeral of Efstratia Mavrapidou will take place tomorrow on Wednesday at the cemetery of Sykamnia.
