Hours after losing in singles R4, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis qualify for the semifinals in doubles

By 2 years ago

They keep beating the best doubles teams in the world. The AusOpen champs are now 9-1 in 2022.

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis, on a day when both lost Round of 16 singles matches just hours ago, are headed to another doubles semifinal in Miami.

This doubles pairing is lethal and must watch tennis. Doubles is back ladies and gents.

Earlier, Alexander Zverev found his way past Thanasi Kokkinakis on Tuesday in Miami, but the third-ranked German says that people need to watch out for the Aussie in the weeks and months to come.

“He will be at the top of the game very shortly, I think,” Zverev said of the 25-year-old. “I think he’s going to be top 50, top 20. Then we will see how it goes. He has a massive game. He is obviously a massive talent which was hindered by injuries. I wish him nothing but the best.”

Kokkinakis had the best month of his career in January when he won the title in his hometown at Adelaide and then captured the Australian Open doubles title with his best mate Nick Kyrgios.

The momentum has spilled over into March for World No.97.

Kokkinakis already has 12 wins in 2022 – he had 14 wins on tour from 2017 to 2021, due to a litany of injuries.

Kyrgios, who received a wildcard to the tournament, was defeated in straight sets by Italian rising star Jannick Sinner.

The ninth-seed defeated Kyrgios 7-6(6) 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals in a match that included a classic Kyrgios meltdown.
