Greek health authorities have raised concerns about the rapid increase of a new coronavirus variant, codenamed 'Eris' (EG.5.1), which has been classified as a 'variant of epidemiological interest' by the World Health Organization. The variant is currently most prevalent in Crete, with a total of 41 new cases confirmed between May 31 and July 27.

The emergence of the Eris variant serves as a reminder that SARS-CoV-2, along with its mutations and sub-variants, is still a cause for concern, highlighted Matina Pagoni, the President of the Association of Hospital Doctors of Athens & Piraeus (EINAP). However, there is currently no evidence to suggest that Eris causes more severe illness, as symptoms have been reported as mild and the spread of the variant remains under control, without overwhelming the healthcare system.

Nevertheless, the scientific community is particularly worried about the potential for Eris to further spread within the community during the upcoming autumn season, when people return to work, schools reopen, and individuals spend more time indoors due to changing weather conditions.

Pagoni stressed the need for citizens, especially those belonging to high-risk groups, to stay informed about the variant and adhere to relevant protective measures. Raising awareness and promoting adherence to precautionary measures will be crucial in mitigating the potential impact of the Eris variant as Greece prepares for the autumn season.
