A Virtual Tour of the Holy Monastery of Hosios Loukas of Steiriotis

By 2 weeks ago

The Holy Monastery of Hosios Loukas of Steiriotis in Boeotia, a major site for world Christian art and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, can be visited virtually thanks to the Foundation of the Hellenic World.

Visitors can admire the monument of the highest religious, historical, and archaeological importance in Byzantine culture and learn about Saint Loukas the Steiriotis and the Monastery named after him in Steiriotis, Boeotia.

On this journey, viewers follow two virtual characters, a monk and a female traveller, and learn about the important milestones in the Saint's life through the narration of his life, with the simultaneous, for the first time, visualisation of it with modern Byzantine illustration by the iconographer, Mr Giannoulis Lymberopoulos.

The tour starts at the Dormition of the Saint in 953, with his Holy Sepulcher at its core. It continues at the three churches of the Monastery: the Church of Panagia, which the Saint built while he was alive; the Catholicos Church, where his Holy Relic was housed; and the Church of Agia Barbara, the crypt where his Holy Tomb is located.

With a brief historical, archaeological and theological commentary, visitors wander among the original architectural structures of the buildings, admiring their interior decoration, the magnificent marble floors, the frescoes, and the exquisite mosaics of high Byzantine aesthetics.

At the same time, important historical moments associated with the Holy Monastery are presented from the early years to the period of the Turkish occupation, the Greek War of Independence, and even to the present day.
