Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, speaking at a press conference on Thursday, emphasised the excellent relations between Italy and Greece in response to a question from Greek public broadcaster ERT.

She highlighted her close collaboration with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the shared priorities of the two nations.

“Relations between Italy and Greece are excellent, as is natural between two countries that share a geostrategic identity and belong to the European Union and the Atlantic Alliance,” Meloni stated. She noted that both leaders often work closely in European Councils and initiatives such as MED9, MED5, and European Summits, playing a pivotal role in shaping regional and European policies.

Reflecting on recent developments, Meloni highlighted the significance of the North-South Summit in Finland, describing it as a major step in fostering dialogue among nations that were previously divided on economic and political lines. She credited both Greece and Italy for contributing to these positive changes in European cooperation.

Meloni detailed the broad range of issues on which she and Mitsotakis align, including security, defense, migration, environmental protection, and climate crisis management. She underscored their shared commitment to tackling challenges uniquely affecting southern European nations.

Looking ahead, Meloni announced plans for an intergovernmental conference, the first since 2017, which will take place in Rome in February. The conference aims to solidify bilateral cooperation with a joint statement and agreements in key areas such as security and civil protection.

“Kyriakos Mitsotakis and I talk about many issues on which we have a common approach,” Meloni concluded, signalling a continued deepening of ties between Italy and Greece.
