Greece’s capital has been hit by a heatwave and as temperatures are expected to reach over 36°C on Friday July 5th, the Acropolis will be closed for a few hours as it was today.
The hilltop UNESCO World Heritage site, the Acropolis closed for a few hours on Thursday July 4th between the hours of 1pm-5pm and will close during those times again on Friday July 5th in order to protect staff and visitors from the dangers of heatstroke, according to the Greek Culture Ministry.
If temperatures in the city exceed 36°C, temperatures at the Acropolis will measure above 40°C, due to its altitude and lack of shade.
Today, July 4th was the first time this summer that high temperatures shut down the Acropolis, though it also happened in previous years.
Visitors who have purchased tickets online for the affected dates and hours can visit any of the ticket issuing posts and exchange for a different date, or alternatively email etickets@tap.gr to receive further information.
Make sure you pack your water, sunscreen, umbrella and hats before you go outside!
