Tribe Wearables develop smart shorts to make workouts more effective

A Greek startup, Tribe Wearables is developing high-tech clothing to make workouts more effective.

The Tribe Wearables shorts contain sensors that collect data and send it to an app, which will then offer feedback on how to improve your workout while also helping to prevent injuries.

Founder, Demetres Stordopoulos was a keen basketball player when he suffered a knee injury in 2010 while studying at university. The computer science student was frustrated by weeks of physiotherapy exercises and felt helpless as he was unable to check if he was on the right track to recover in between check-ups with his doctor.

A trip to a biomechanics lab in 2013 inspired Stordopoulos. He wanted to take the lab's monitoring technology and put it into gym clothes to track the wearer's progress and health.

He recalls that his complex technology idea was not an easy task and the prototype was "like a pair of shorts, a computer and an octopus had a child." But Demetres believes that the high-tech clothing will prevent sports injuries and give people more control over their own fitness.

Tribe Wearables' lead bioengineer, Nikos Aggelousis admitted that he was skeptical at first and felt the project was too ambitious. "The idea was to develop a wearable by putting an entire biomechanics lab on a pair of shorts, using an embedded technology that itself was under research and development," he said.

Paper-thin sensors make the smart technology in the clothes almost unnoticeable.
