World Cycling Day in Athens- The importance of "green travel"

By 4 years ago

On the occasion of World Cycling Day, Athens mayor Kostas Bakogiannis together with Greek Environment and Energy Minister Kostis Hatzidakis, cycled from Kotzia Square to Zappeion.

World Bicycle Day is a chance for people around the globe to pay tribute to the bicycle and the many benefits it brings to society.

"We are here today for a symbolic move. So that we can show that there is another way of life, a different, better way of life. My wish and belief... Next year, on Cycling Day, let us all celebrate it again here in the 'Great Walk' route," Bakogiannis said.

Hatzidakis announced the government had decided to speed up work for the creation of two major bicycle lanes in Athens: The Gazi-Kifissia bike path (part of the largest Faliro-Kifissia bike path) and the Katehaki-Evangelismos bike path through The National Technical University of Athens.

Emphasising the importance of "green travel" for the government, the minister noted that the Prime Minister will present the government's plan to switch to" e-mobility with environment bonuses for electric bicycles."
