A number of Greek-Americans have been elected (or re-elected) in the hotly-contested 2020 elections. The results are as follows:
Republican candidate and proud Greek American Nicole Malliotakis claimed victory in the race for New York’s 11th congressional district.
“I entered this race with eyes wide open knowing that victory wouldn’t come easy. But, from the start I knew this race was never about me,” Malliotakis said, adding “this race was always about you, the hardworking New Yorker who obeys the law, pays their taxes and gets up every morning and goes to work.”
Dina Titus
In Nevada's 1st Congressional District (which includes the city of Las Vegas), Democrat Dina Titus won by a wide margin over her Republican opponent, Joyce Bentley.
Charlie Christ
In Florida's 13th Congressional District (which includes much of Pinellas County in the Clearwater area), Democratic Greek-Cypriot Charlie Crist (originally Christodoulou) won re-election with 53% of the vote.
Republican Gus Bilirakis won Florida’s 12th congressional district that represents all of Pasco and northern parts of Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.
He grew up in Tarpon Springs, Florida, and is the grandson of Greek immigrants.
Bilirakis gathered a 62.9 majority against Democratic candidate Kimberly Walker (37.1).
John Sarbanes
Democrat John Sarbanes won Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District.
With 75 percent of the votes counted, Sarbanes received 69.6%.
Democrat Chris Pappas won New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District.
Michael Gianaris
Michael Gianaris ran unopposed in the general election, handing him an automatic win once the polls closed Tuesday night in New York City.
Gianaris represents the 12th Senatorial District, which covers Astoria, Long Island City and Sunnyside, as well as parts of Woodside, Maspeth, Ridgewood and Woodhaven.
Steven Xiarhos
Steven Xiarhos, grandson of Greek immigrants and Republican candidate for State Representative in the Fifth Barnstable District, declared victory on Tuesday evening.
Michael Tannousis
Republican Michael Tannousis won the race in the 64th Assembly District, defeating Democratic challenger Brandon Patterson.
James Skoufis
James Skoufis was re-elected in the 39th District of the State Senate in New York.
