Greek Chocolate Cake

Sokolatopita (in Greek: Σοκολατόπιτα) is a heavenly chocolate cake, moistened with a light syrup.

If you need an excuse to eat all the chocolate you crave without feeling guilty, then surely today, World Chocolate Day, is THAT day.

To celebrate, here is our Sokolatopita recipe for you to try:

Ingredients:

For the chocolate syrup:

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 1/2 cups of sugar
  • 50 g chocolate couverture
  • 50 g cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup cognac (optional)

For the chocolate cake:

  • 4 eggs
  • 200 g granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups of flour
  • 50 g cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoon(s) baking powder
  • 2 pinches of salt
  • orange zest, of 1 orange

Directions:

For the chocolate syrup:

  1. In a large saucepan melt the sugar, cocoa, water. As soon as it comes to a boil, remove from heat.
  2. Chop the chocolate couverture into small pieces and add to the saucepan.
  3. Do not stir for 20-30 seconds so the chocolate can emulsify and then stir until incorporated.
  4. *Optional step: Add the cognac and stir for a few minutes.
  5. Set it aside to cool.

For the chocolate cake:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  2. Grease the baking pan with butter and set it aside until needed.
  3. In a bowl, add the eggs and sugar. Beat until it rises and becomes very light and fluffy.
  4. In another bowl, add the flour, baking powder and cocoa powder. Mix until completely combined.
  5. Combine ingredients from the two bowls together and add the orange zest and salt.
  6. Gently fold the batter with a spatula, so that the mixture remains as fluffy as possible.
  7. Pour the batter into the baking pan and bake for 35-40 minutes.
  8. When ready, remove the pan from oven. Use a knife to poke a few holes in the cake and immediately pour the cool syrup over the cake.
  9. Serve pieces of the sokolatopita (hot or cold) with ice cream or some whipped cream on the side.
  10. *Caution: It is absolutely mouthwatering!

Nine out of ten people like chocolate. The tenth person always lies. Happy World Chocolate Day 2021.
