An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit Greece Wednesday evening and occurred in the sea area 25 kilometres south of the island of Astypalaia.

Some seismology institutes give the magnitude also as 5.1R, 5.3R and 5.5. R

The earthquake occurred at 11 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2023.

It had a focal depth of 108.4 kilometres.

The earthquake was felt in the neighbouring islands, particularly in Crete.

According to local media cretalive.gr, the tremor was felt throughout Crete,  especially in Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia and many more areas of the prefectures of Heraklion and Lasithi. It had a long duration, and the sense of its intensity presented an escalation.

Some locals posted on social media that they felt their house was shaking for 30 seconds.

Seismologists Gerasimos Houliaras told the media that the earthquake is not of concern due to its high focal depth of over 100 km.
