Archaeologists from the British Museum have unearthed a 4,000-year-old Sumerian temple in southern Iraq, which may have been a place of worship for Alexander the Great.

The temple, located in the ancient city of Girsu, contained cryptic Greek inscriptions that did not make sense historically until now. It is believed that Alexander himself may have commissioned the temple to honor ancient gods and proclaim his own divine status.

The discovery of the temple suggests that ancient societies had accurate historical knowledge and cultural memory. British Museum archaeologist Dr Sebastien Rey describes the findings as “mind-blowing” and suggests that there is a possibility that Alexander himself visited the site before his death.

The temple’s offerings, artifacts, and Greek inscriptions further support the theory that it was a place of worship dedicated to Alexander and the ancient gods.

The significance of the temple lies in its connection between Greek and Sumerian cultures and the potential deification of Alexander the Great.
