In the initial quarter of 2024, Greece saw a noteworthy decline in mortality rates, with deaths decreasing by 8%, according to data released by ELSTAT.

The total number of deaths, encompassing both COVID-19-related and other causes, stood at 32,822, comprising 16,597 men and 16,225 women. This figure reflects a decrease of 2,836 deaths compared to the same period in 2023, marking a significant shift.

ELSTAT‘s report further highlights a decrease of 2,795 deaths (7.8%) compared to the average recorded in the first 13 weeks of the years 2018-2023, which totalled 35,617 deaths.

Analysis of mortality trends over recent years reveals varying percentage changes, with 2023 exhibiting a notable decrease of 13.2% compared to 2022. Conversely, earlier years witnessed increases. Notably, the reduction in deaths during the initial 13 weeks of 2024, compared to the corresponding period in 2023, was consistent across all weeks, with particularly substantial drops recorded in the 7th, 9th, and 8th weeks.

Examining mortality by age groups indicates decreases across most demographics, with the most significant reductions observed in individuals aged 80 to 84, 85 to 89, and those over 90 years old.

Geographically, reductions in mortality rates were observed across all regions of residence, with particularly notable declines recorded in Attica, Central Macedonia, and Western Greece.

The latest mortality data suggests positive trends in Greece‘s public health landscape, signalling improvements in various age groups and regions across the country.
