A new reconstructed historical unit: Macedonian Phalangite (Early Hellenistic Period)

Association ΚORYVANTES team proudly presents a series of new reconstructed historical units which aim to highlight important historical moments of the armies of the Ancient Eastern Mediterranean World, using the tools of Living History, Interpretation, and Experimental Archaeology.

A possible realistic image of a Macedonian Phalangite of the Early Hellenistic Period was presented by Association ΚORYVANTES—with respect to historical accuracy—by processing high-quality materials and following reconstruction techniques within the framework of experimental archaeology.

🟢 The Chalcidian Helmet

The warrior wears a very well-known version of the Chalcidian type of helmet: the renowned Chalcidian helmet of the Odryssian King Seuthes (second half of the 4th century BC, Golyama Kosmatka Mound), currently being exposed in the Iskra—Kazanlak museum.

The helmet was constructed by Georgios Roussis and modified by HellenicArmors.

🟢 The Linothorax

The "linothorax" ("Tube & Yoke", Jarva's Type IV, version 4) was made of a core of stiffened leather and ten layers of linen. The Linothorax was constructed by the exceptional team of Epos Custom Leather.

🟢The Sarissa

The Phalangite uses a ten cubit (4.8m) long Sarissa (based on the references of Asclepiodotus & Aelian in the Early Hellenistic period.

The Sarissa bears the so-called "small spearhead" described by Andronikos and uses the biconical/polygonal "connecting tube" with the "split" described by Andronikos.

The Sarissa equipment (including exact replicas of the "small spearhead" and the "connecting tube") was custom-made by the Res Bellica team.

🟢 The Shield

The Shield's hand-painted decoration pattern is based on the ones depicted in the "Agios Athanasios Tomb frescoes." It is made of wood, linen, and leather. It is 65cm in diameter and has an offset single armband.

The prime craftsmanship makes the Shield of the HellenicArmors team.
