Nikitas Kaklamanis Elected Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament with Broad Support

Nikitas Kaklamanis has been elected Speaker of the Greek Parliament, receiving an overwhelming 247 votes out of 297 participating MPs.

His candidacy was supported by members of New Democracy, PASOK, SYRIZA, the Hellenic Solution, Spartans, and 18 independent MPs. However, MPs from the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), New Left, NIKI, and Freedom Sailing opted for a "present" vote, while three MPs were absent from the process.

Kaklamanis succeeds Constantine Tasoulas, who resigned as Speaker following his nomination for the presidency by the ruling New Democracy party. In his acceptance speech, Kaklamanis described his election as the "culmination" of his political career and hinted that he would not run for re-election in the next national elections.

The new Speaker emphasised the dual role of Parliament, beyond legislation, as a vital institution for civic education and ethical leadership. Drawing inspiration from classical philosophy, he invoked Aristotle's principles of courage, prudence, and justice, calling on MPs to exemplify virtues that inspire public trust.

Kaklamanis urged Parliament to transcend political divisions, advocating for unity and collective efforts to address Greece's challenges. “In this chamber, there are no winners or losers, no small or large parties. There are 300 individuals who can serve as role models for the Greek people—if they choose to,” he stated.

He concluded with a message of solidarity and shared purpose, stressing the importance of unity in the face of contemporary challenges: “Above all, unity is required, as this is the most pressing need in the unusual times we live in.”

Kaklamanis’ election signals a call for renewed collaboration and ethical leadership within the Hellenic Parliament.
