ATHENS, Greece – February 4, 2025 – A persistent swarm of earthquakes continues to shake the region between the Greek islands of Amorgos and Santorini, causing concern and prompting evacuations. The latest tremor, a 4.5 magnitude quake, struck at 7:10 pm local time on Tuesday, adding to the growing anxiety in the area.
This latest quake follows a series of tremors, most registering between 3 and 3.5 magnitude. The epicenter of the 4.5 magnitude quake was located 24 km southwest of Arkessini, Amorgos, at a depth of 14.1 km. While this is the latest significant tremor, the region experienced a 5.0 magnitude quake earlier in the sequence. Seismologists are closely monitoring the situation, but it remains unclear whether the 5.0 magnitude event was the main shock or if more powerful tremors are yet to come.
The ongoing seismic activity has prompted a large-scale evacuation of Santorini, with over 10,000 people relocated as a precautionary measure. On Amorgos, residents, fearing further tremors and potential landslides, have sought higher ground, driving their vehicles up into the mountains. Reports from Santorini confirm that landslides have already occurred, adding to the sense of unease. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as they become available.
