The much-anticipated Lighting Ceremony of the Olympic Flame for the 33rd Olympic Games 2024, set to be held in Paris from July 26th to August 11th, commenced precisely at 11:30 (Athens time) as planned.
Embracing the spirit of antiquity, the ceremony, hosted by Nikos Aliagas, unfolded against the backdrop of Ancient Olympia in the presence of dignitaries, including the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou. This marked a triumphant return to tradition after two consecutive events marred by the subdued atmosphere brought on by Covid-19 restrictions – the Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2021 and the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.
Katerina Sakellaropoulou, accompanied by IOC President Thomas Bach and HOC President Spyros Capralos, graced the occasion, setting the stage for a breathtaking spectacle. The ceremony kicked off with a stirring rendition of the Olympic Anthem by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato. This was followed by the unfurling of the flags of France and Greece, accompanied by the soul-stirring strains of their respective national anthems.
