Courtney was enjoying her solo adventure, exploring the Greek islands after finishing university. While in Naxos, she decided to join a friend for a sightseeing trip on a rented quad bike. Tragedy struck when the bike, driven by her friend, hit a fence while attempting to pull over for an oncoming car on a narrow road.
The impact sent Courtney hurtling down a 13-foot ravine. To make matters worse, the quad bike also tumbled down the embankment, landing on top of her.
“Courtney fell off the back and rolled down the ravine and ended with the quad on top of her,” recounts her distraught mother, Debbie. “She got up and fell back over because she couldn’t breathe.”
Fortunately, both wore helmets, potentially saving their lives. A local man came to their aid while emergency services were called. Courtney was airlifted to Athens General Hospital after initially being treated at a hospital in Naxos.
Suffering from a split liver, a torn spleen, internal bleeding, and pleural effusion, Courtney’s words to her mother upon her arrival were heartbreaking: “I thought I was gonna have to die alone.”
Debbie had rushed to be by her daughter’s side after receiving a concerning voicemail from Courtney about the accident. The family is now focused on bringing Courtney back to the UK for further treatment. However, the cost of a private air ambulance is exorbitant, exceeding £36,000. Even a commercial flight with medical assistance carries a hefty price tag of around £5,000.
A fundraising campaign has been launched to help cover the costs of transporting Courtney home and supporting her recovery. You can contribute to the fund here. https://www.gofundme.com/f/please-help-my-sister-come-home-to-her-family/
This horrifying experience highlights the dangers of quad bikes, particularly on unfamiliar and potentially hazardous roads.
While Courtney’s friend was insured to drive, locals have expressed concerns about the safety of these vehicles in the area.
