Completely self taught, musician and songwriter George Karantonis composed his first song at age 7, penning the poignant lyrics; “Xenos ekei, xenos kai edo, patrida nisi, to yiofiri ego” or “A stranger there, a stranger here too, homeland homeland, the adopted son”. GCT speaks to George about his amazing life’s journey from humble childhood, to becoming a member of famed band ‘Moda Blue’, his Opening Ceremony performance at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, the song ‘Australia’ he composed at the request of late Archbishop Stylianos and, more recently, his historical rendition of the Greek Anthem as part of 200th Greek Independence Day celebrations.
After Holy Friday mass in Australia last night, Tsalikis speaks to the congregation in an emotional address saying, “I am happy because the Greek have not lost their faith in Mary, God and Jesus. Mitropanos sadly passed away on April 17, 2012 after suffering from a heart attack and pulmonary edema. He will always be remembered as one of Greece’s most recognisable voices and legend of the rebetika genre.
