Cypriot Michael Arghyrou Named Head of Greek Prime Minister’s Economic Affairs Office

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis appointed Michael Arghyrou as the new head of his economic affairs office on Tuesday, following the resignation of Alexis Patelis as chief economic advisor the day before.

Born in Nicosia in 1972, Arghyrou brings extensive expertise in economics. A graduate of the Athens University of Economics and Business, he holds both a Master’s and a PhD in Economics from Queen Mary, University of London.

Since July 2019, Arghyrou has served as President of the Council of Economic Experts, representing Greece in key European bodies such as the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC), the Eurogroup Working Group (EWG), and the Governing Council of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM).

A key architect of Greece’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, known as Greece 2.0, Arghyrou is one of five members on the plan’s Steering Committee overseeing its implementation. He is also a regular member of the Board of Directors of the European Investment Bank (EIB), further solidifying his reputation as a prominent figure in economic policymaking.
