Near-final results from Greece indicate that the governing center-right New Democracy (ND) party is leading comfortably in the EU Parliamentary election, securing just under 28% of the vote. This, however, marks a decline from the 33% they achieved in the previous election—a benchmark the party leadership had hoped to meet in Sunday’s poll.
Around 373 million EU citizens are eligible to vote in the European Parliament elections from June 6-9. The elections will determine the 720 members of the only directly elected body of the EU, which negotiates laws, approves budgets, and has significant oversight powers. Current projections suggest the centre-right European People’s Party will win the most seats, followed by the centre-left Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.
