155,000 children guaranteed places in public child care facilities

Interior Minister Takis Theodorikakos and Labour Minister Giannis Vroutsis announced on Wednesday that a total of 155,000 children will be guaranteed place in public child care facilities.

According to the announcement, children will be given a voucher which secures their place in public nurseries and childcare facilities, as provided by the Harmonization of Professional and Family Life 2019-2020 program.

Interior Minister Takis Theodorikakos said that “our government supports new couples and the family, as an institution,” and stressed that these 155,000 places were secured for children whose parents met financial and social criteria.

Labour Minister Giannis Vroutsis said that “supporting families is at the core of our policy, and we are starting our effort on this basis,” and noted that “there will be a structural change in the system so that no child will be left outside of nurseries or childcare facilities.”

Deputy Labour Minister Domna Michailidou said that “this year, for the first time, there no child was left out; we are doing the best to manage a situation left behind by the previous government.”

According to the Hellenic Agency for Local Development and Local Government (EETAA) SA, which took part in the meeting with the ministers, the total cost of the program for 2010-2020 stands at 270 million euros.
