Greece’s Maria Sakkari fell short in the San Jose semi-final, losing to China’s Saisa Zheng 7/6, 6/2.
Sakkari, a finalist at San Jose in 2018, was aiming to reach the final for the second consecutive year. However, she was defeated by the unseeded Zheng in straight sets.
The Greek athlete found herself in a tight battle in the first set with only two breaks of serve, which resulted in an opening set tie-breaker. Zheng edged ahead in the encounter, taking the first set seven points to five in the tie-break.
Sakkari, the seventh seed, was outclassed in the second set, broken on four occasions to go down 6/2.
