Greece records highest daily number of coronavirus cases

Greece recorded 203 new cases of COVID-19 in 24 hours, the single largest daily number of cases since the pandemic began.

This raises the total number of cases to 5,623.

According to sources, authorities are on alert and are reportedly considering additional measures.

The previous highest number reported in a single day was 156 cases, which was recorded in April.

Geographical distribution of new cases:

  • 29 were identified after checks at the country’s entrance gates
  • 4 other important cases (who voluntarily got tested)
  • 50 cases in Halkidiki
  • 35 cases in Thessaloniki
  • 38 cases in Attica
  • 8 cases in Larissa
  • 7 cases in Corfu
  • 5 cases in Rodopi
  • 3 cases in Dodecanese
  • 3 cases in Cyclades
  • 3 cases in Serres
  • 2 cases in Argolida
  • 2 cases in Heraklio
  • 2 cases in Kavala
  • 2 cases in Corinth
  • 2 cases in Pieria
  • 2 cases in Trikala
  • 1 case in Viotia
  • 1 case in Drama
  • 1 case in Kastoria
  • 1 case in Magnisia
  • 1 case in Xanthi
  • 1 case in Pella

1,438 are considered to be related to travel from abroad and 2,705 are related to an already known case.

Of the new cases, 26 were identified in the Attica region and 43 in the Thessaloniki region.

Twenty-two individuals are in ICU. Their median age is 63 years, while a 59.1% has an underlying health condition or are aged 70 or over.

The country’s pandemic death toll remains at 212. Of these 32.5% were women. The median age of all was 76 years and 95.8% had an underlying condition and/or was aged 70+.

It is recalled earlier this week, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed “We must reactivate our national vaccine, which is nothing more than our ‘philotimo’ and together we must follow the measures indicated by the experts and I am sure that if we do we will emerge victorious from this difficult battle as well.”
