Greece shuts down all schools and pre-school facilities

Greek authorities announced that primary schools and childcare centres will be closed until the end of November, to help contain the spread of covid-19.

Education Minister Niki Kerameus stated that primary students will be schooled by a combination of educational TV and remote instruction, with the TV broadcasting lessons in the mornings and remote instruction from 2-5 pm.

Distance learning has already been implemented in secondary schools and universities.

The World Health Organisation recommends that educational institutions only be shut as a last resort.

Greece entered its second nationwide lockdown last weekend. Furthermore, there is a nationwide night curfew from 9pm-5am.

Exceptions: people who need to leave the house for work, health reasons or a short walk with a pet. They will have to send an SMS to 13033, or have a document from their employer.

Announcement on the closure of schools

“Closing elementary schools was the last thing we wanted to do. This is a measure of how serious the situation is,” Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias said.
