Heartbroken family’s message to Greek expat and his 2-month-old baby killed by drunk driver in Trier

By Gct

Giorgos Kompilidis and his two-month old baby daughter Virginia, are among the five victims killed by a ‘drunk’ driver in the German city of Trier earlier this week.

Their relatives have left a heartbreaking message on the sidewalk where they were killed.

Kompilidis protectively held his daughter in his arms as they were killed.

“My Virginia, hold your dad tightly in your arms so he can care for you up in heaven. Look after your mom and your brother like the angel that you’ve become,” the note reads.

“Now is the time for silence, reflection and care for the leaking wound. We are sure that everyone who came to us, each in his own way, will respect the absolute need to gather our scattered pieces in silence. It is a very warm request,” the family told AMNA.

The family also thanked the German authorities for acting “in an exemplary manner”, the medical and nursing staff of the Trier Hospital where the family was treated, with the mother and child returning home.

How the tragic incident in Trier happened

The incident occurred around 1:45pm (local time) on Tuesday, when a 51-year-old German resident of the city drove his car into a crowd of people on the main pedestrian street of Trier in the Rhineland-Palatinate, near the German border with Luxembourg.

According to a police spokesman, he drove a Range Rover SUV at 70-80 km/h and did not stop. He even zigzagged for four minutes, chasing pedestrians one kilometre to Porta Nigra, the city’s main Roman monument.

Among the victims killed were a 9-month-old baby, a 25-year-old woman, a 45-year-old man, a 52-year-old woman and a 72-year-old woman, all from Trier.

In addition to the fifteen injured people, there were many other ‘traumatised’ pedestrians who were in shock after witnessing what had happened.

The driver who was under the influence of alcohol and appeared to have psychiatric problems, was arrested during a dramatic takedown when police stopped the vehicle in a street nearby.
