Dinner with Plato: The popular Greek documentary that shows what Ancient Greeks ate and how they cooked

Have you ever wondered about what the Ancient Greeks used to eat? What did the famous philosopher Plato eat? How did the Ancient Greeks cook? What type of ingredients did they use in their food?

The globally popular documentary series Dinner with Plato (Δείπνο με τον Πλάτωνα), takes viewers to numerous cities around Greece and shows how to make Ancient Greek recipes with traditional ways of cooking.

Dinner with Plato was first released in 2019 by the Greek production company White Fox S.A., and after meeting great success in Greece, it has now become available online all for countries all around the world.

The narrator of the documentary is the Athenian philosopher Plato himself, whose animated version welcomes the audience to his ‘Symposium’, and presents Ancient Greek dishes with products that have been thriving in the Greek land for centuries now.

“We try recipes from ancient banquets, where food and wine flowed abundantly, we participate in a Dionysian feast, we share ancient knowledge, we cook recipes of Ancient Athens, and above all we focus on good quality food, which according to Hippocrates, was the medicine for good health,” animated Plato says to his audience.

Throughout its series of episodes, the documentary takes viewers on trips to the Aegean islands and mainland Greece, it introduces Greek gastronomy, its flavours and its aromas.

With the revival of traditional cooking methods and ancient Greek recipes, people learn the myths and worship practices of the Ancient Greeks as well as various philosophical topics and ideas that Greeks at the time used to discuss.

“Dinner with Plato is an invitation to a delicious journey through time, that aims to spread the advantages of the Mediterranean and Ancient Greek cuisine, and is a unique chance to get people into the lifestyle and daily diet habits of Plato, Socrates and Aristotle,” the creators of the documentary, White Fox S.A. Productions, have stated.

The episodes that have already been released include ancient recipes from Athens, Ancient Olympia, Santorini, Crete, Kos, Rhodes, Amorgos, Sifnos, Kythnos, Naxos, Chios, Folegandros, and more, where the secrets of the Ancient Greek cuisine are being beautifully revealed by Plato.
