Celtic FC summer signing Giorgos Giakoumakis has been named the best Greek player abroad after becoming the top goal scorer in the Eredivisie, the Netherland's top football league.

The 27-year-old was named the best Greek footballer abroad by the Greek Football Players' Association for his impressive 26 goals for VVV-Venlo.

In fact, he was the league’s top goal scorer despite VVV-Venlo being relegated.

With the Dutch club relegated, German outfit Werder Bremen expressed interest, but ultimately it was Greek-Australian Ange Postecoglou who got his signature for Celtic FC.

Giakoumakis penned a four-year-deal in the summer but has yet to hit the ground running since arriving at Celtic Park as he has been missed the majority of matches due to injury.

His £2.5m move has so far resulted in a solitary goal in a 2-0 victory against St Johnstone in October.

Born in the Cretan city of Heraklion, Giakoumakis has previously also played for AEK Athens, OFI and Górnik Zabrze.

He has six caps for the National Greek team, scoring once in a match against Cyprus.
