Thessaloniki Metro on the final stretch – Expected handover on December 31, 2023

The President of Attiko Metro, Nikos Tachiaos, and the Managing Director, Nikos Kouretas, said that the handover of the Thessaloniki Metro for operation is scheduled for December 31, 2023. The announcement was said during a visit by a delegation of the TEE/Department of Central Macedonia.

They emphasised the high safety standards of the Thessaloniki Metro, which, as they emphasised, foresee protocols even for the infinitesimal chances of failure.

As stated in a TEE/TKM announcement, in the context of the briefing, it was highlighted that in Venizelos metro station this week, the concreting of the slabs in the central part of the station is finished. The railway infrastructure has also been installed and in the coming days the first test train crossing.

At the same time, the return of the antiquities to the Venizelos station will begin in the next few days so that they can be repositioned exactly where they were located. In terms of trains, the procurement of 15 more trains has started and the delivery will start in late 2024.

Each train will have a capacity of 450 people and the frequency of services in each direction during peak hours will be one and a half minutes. In June, the installation of ticket offices and cancellation gates begins.

Finally, the necessary feasibility studies for the development of the extension of the Metro to the northwest and towards the airport are being developed with the aim of securing resources for the project during the current financial period as well.

In his statements, the President of TEE/TKM Giorgos Tsakoumis, characterised the Metro as the most emblematic project of Thessaloniki and estimated that “indeed next year we will have a Metro in Thessaloniki.”
